TEACHER TRAINING

Computer education class for teachers

In a country where approximately 60% of public school teachers have never finished high school and 90% have never received any formal training, HTAC’s teacher training program has been consistently recognized by Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) and many other educators as one of the most effective in the country for preparing and developing  teachers – one of Afghanistan’s most critically-needed human resources. Our multi-method teacher training approach utilizes a 5-step cycle that has proven to be effective in successfully preparing both experienced and new teachers to excel in the classroom.

  1. Seminars – that introduce teaching philosophies and methodologies.

  2. Modeling – observing experienced and highly-competent teachers in the classroom.

  3. Co-teaching – with HTAC teacher trainers or experienced teachers in the classroom.

  4. Independent teaching – while being observed and evaluated by HTAC teacher trainers.

  5. Development – led by our teacher trainers, establishing individual development plans and periodic coaching.

HTAC was one of the first organizations in Afghanistan to establish basic standards of teaching performance that all teachers must consistently demonstrate if they are to successfully complete our rigorous program.

  • Ability to develop and communicate learning goals.
  • Ability to develop lesson plans based on goals.
  • Ability to utilize appropriate teaching methodologies in the classroom.
  • Ability to physically set-up and arrange the classroom in a manner conducive to learning.
  • Ability to identify and utilize appropriate materials and aids that enhance the learning experience.
  • Ability to understand the psychological factors that contribute or hinder student learning and adjust teaching as necessary.
  • Ability to effectively manage student behaviors in the classroom in ways that facilitate a safe, nurturing, and productive learning environment.
  • The ability to accurately evaluate student progress and performance using a variety of evaluation tools, instruments, and methods.
  • A strong grasp of subject matter knowledge (i.e. mathematics, science, history, language, religious studies, the arts).
  • A strong working knowledge of the educational system in Afghanistan and its goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver a high degree of professionalism (i.e. professional dress and manner, being on-time, being organized, leadership) in the classroom.

Because our teachers tend to be more knowledgeable and skilled (and as such, a great resource for students), HTAC works hard to seek funds to offer these teachers stipends to compliment their meager salaries and provide them with on-going opportunities to learn new subjects and support their continuing education.

HTAC’s reputation for excellence earned us the opportunity to manage a multi-year program (awarded to HTAC by the Ministry of Education), to train approximately 2,400 teachers in Farah Province.
